Conference Profile

Tourism Futures brings together sectors that have a direct and indirect role in tourism, so that collectively they can examine and respond to the issues influencing its growth.

Delegates at Tourism Futures:

  • Receive the latest information on industry performance, trends and forecasts;
  • Obtain a global perspective on future directions;
  • Contribute to the development of an integrated perspective on the needs of the industry;
  • Receive updates on best practice and trends.

The conference format enables delegates to focus on their particular areas of interest whilst still gaining an overview of the outcomes from other conference sessions.

A diverse range of keynote speakers provide a foundation for conference debate and discussion. Keynote presenters provide an update on the current state of play, emerging trends and challenges. Concurrent sessions enable the delegates to contribute more in depth discussion on key conference themes.

Issues presented and raised throughout the conference are tracked and recorded to contribute to the production of a Tourism Futures communiqué for distribution to government and industry nationwide.

'Leaders Driving Innovation'

The Australian tourism industry must respond to global consumer trends, keep pace with advances in technology, protect and sustain its unique natural and cultural assets and develop work practices that deliver consistent service excellence.

This requires innovative leadership at every level.

It means creating new opportunities that build on our strengths. Australia’s strategic location in the Asia-Pacific region, its nature, open and friendly people, indigenous culture, climate, security, sporting prowess, and excellence in event management are well known.

Capitalising on these strengths can only be fully achieved through the innovative actions of industry, government and the community.

Convenor's Message

Tourism over the next few years faces an array of challenges and opportunities never before experienced.

The current economic conditions are unparalleled in the history of the modern tourism industry. Government and community responses to Climate Change world-wide are creating challenges never before encountered.

There are real fears that trade barriers are emerging under the guise of climate change response - with long haul destinations most affected. Technology is coming to the fore in energy efficiency and management - an area vital to the tourism industry. Emerging online communication modes are growing at an enormous rate and change forever the way the tourism industry attracts and engages with its customers. The Asia-Pacific and Indo-Pacific regions offer immense opportunity.

As destinations and individual businesses alike seek out growth and profitability it is vital that they are armed with knowledge of the latest consumer trends, technology, demographic and societal movements. Also critical is knowledge of their competitors’ forward strategies.
